Focusing on the geographic area now covered by Sumter, Clarendon and Lee counties, Historical Sketches of Sumter County…. Its Birth and Growth turns back the clock to the days when South Carolina was first settled by European immigrants.

The book contains 91 sketches which were published originally over a period of seven years (1967-74)in The Sumter News, the weekly newspaper in Sumter S.C. These sketches, enhanced by 40 photographs, give the reader a glimpse into the history of what was once known as Sumter District, that area of the Palmetto State which contained Claremont, Clarendon and Salem counties.

The book is divided into four parts. The first, which has 29 sketches, is called “Glimpses Into Early Life of Sumter District.” The second, with 18 chapters, puts the spotlight on old churches.  Historic homes and plantations are subjects of seven sketches in the third part. The final section (37 sketches) concerns some notable early settlers.
