Overview – Established in 1800 and located in the heart of South Carolina, Sumter County was named after the Revolutionary War hero General Thomas Sumter, whose fighting spirit earned him the nickname “The Gamecock”. The county has played an integral role in American history. Battles during both the Revolutionary and Civial Wars were fought in the area.
